Metamucil & Constipation
The interest of discussion here is the Procter & Gamble brand Metamucil with psyllium husk as its main ingredient. Therefore the non-psyllium fiber sure is excluded. :-) As a Fiber Supplement
A low cost way to treat constipation, generally safe to be taken everyday provided of course you follow the recommended dosage and increase the intake gradually to avoid problems with gas.
People who have to be careful are folks who have intestinal problems. For example, people who have Crohn's disease take it to relieve mild to moderate diarrhea by adding bulk to stool under doctor's supervision due to the risk of toxic megacolon which is a life-threatening condition.
Are you on medication such as aspirin, warfarin and carbamazpine? Fiber supplements can decrease the absorption of these medications.
Do you have diabetes? You might have to adjust your dosage of insulin as fiber supplement can reduce blood sugar level.
As a Laxative
Psyllium adsorbs and holds moisture which supplies the necessary bulk to form easily eliminated stools. Bowel movements generally takes effect between 12 to 72 hours. It is classified as oral/bulk former laxative as Citrucel is.
Apart from gas, possible side effects are bloating, cramping, choking or you may become more constipated if not taken with enough water.
Other Health Problems
Helps prevent diverticulitis attacks by increasing fiber in diet. Prevents hemorrhoids or hemorrhoid flare-ups. Prevents recurrence of anal fissure, relieve discomfort and promotes healing. One in six of constipation-dominant irritable bowel syndrome sufferers are significantly helped. Though I understand they have to avoid the capsule with calcium which was meant to reduce diarrhea.
Comparison with Psyllium Husk
Unless you fancy flavors of orange, lemon and berry or have no choking problem with the gritty food. You might be inclined to compare between these two.
