Home Remedies for Constipation
I had the pleasure of tapping into the "green" knowledge of Orit and Patrick on home remedies for constipation. The following are their answers to some of my questions.
1. What is your personal favourite constipation remedy?
" Since they are natural, simple but effective my favorite home remedies for constipation would be eating high fiber fruits and / or drinking their fresh juices.
They simply seem to work in most average constipation cases. Fruits like apples, pears, prunes, figs, dates, papaya, grapes and their respective juices are all very helpful. They are pure nature and that's exactly what I love about it.
Nature can definitely take care of these relatively simple problems. There's no real need to buy over the counter constipation reliefs that basically mimic these natural solutions.
Well to be totally honest, for me there is 1 constipation remedy that really sticks out from the rest. That's because it is a combination of natural resources that will almost make you run for the toilet once you have taken it, and that is:
Prune juice, Applesauce & unprocessed Wheat Bran.
This combination is 'deadly' effective. What you do is take 3/4 cup of prune-juice mix it with one cup of applesauce and one cup of coarse bran. Take 1 or 2 tablespoons a day and store the rest in the fridge for later.
Drink lots of water with it and you have a real powerhouse constipation remedy. The combination of these ingredients make that they also stimulate each other so to make it an powerful and robust constipation remedy. "
2. Could you share an experience/s helping people overcoming their clogged gut problem using home remedies for constipation?
" First I want to make a small point that in the last few years more and more people think they are suffering from a perceived constipation. Which means that they think they are constipated because they haven't been to the bathroom for a day or two.
But this is not per definition a case of constipation.
Not every body has the same daily bathroom schedule all the time. And when you don't have to go to the toilet for 1 day, that doesn't mean you are immediately constipated. The companies that make laxatives want you to believe that but it's not entirely true.
Some people go three times a day some once and some three times a week, there is no rule, it depends on your system and of course on what you have been eating the last few days.
Real constipation is nevertheless a rather common ailment but can cause a lot of distress in the one who suffers from it. Most of the times it is a result of wrong food habits and an inadequate diet where people simply don't eat healthy and fiber rich foods.
Also some medicines can cause serious constipation, narcotic pain medications like hydrocodone, oxycodone, OxyContin, Percocet, Tylenol with Codeine and Vicodin are known to cause constipation, and also anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) make constipation worse.
Whenever someone asks for help with their constipation, we first determine his/ her food habits, if constipation runs in the family and if he/ she takes medication that could cause constipation. In case of wrong food habits we will explain the necessity of a healthy, balanced and fiber rich diet and lots of water.
In cases where medication is causing the constipation, we advise the person to talk to his/ her doctor about this problem, maybe there are alternative medicines that do not cause constipation.
If that is not possible, the applesauce, wheat bran and prune juice mix is one of the remedies that will get things going again, also products that contain flax seed or psyllium will help in relieving constipation.
But we always tell people to talk to their doctor first before taking anything, this to make sure that the remedy they want to use will not interfere with the medicine(s) they are taking. "
3. You are the first person to tell me that sorbitol can be one of home remedies for constipation. I checked it out and learnt that there are chewing gum addicts who ended up with diarrhea and weight loss because they consumed up to 20 sticks of chewing gum per day! What is your advice on this?
" Yes could very much be true, you can get addicted to almost everything that is out there so also to sugar free chewing gum with all its nasty consequences.
People can get addicted to painkillers, sleeping pills, diet pills, laxatives, video games, coffee, chocolate, drugs, cigarettes, watching soaps or sports on TV, you name it and the Betty Ford center will have a special rehabilitation program for it.
The thing is, too much of anything will do more harm than good. So when you use anything, a remedy or not, please do so moderately, don't go overboard. Same goes for sorbitol whether in gum, candy or ice-cream, a bit can be a help, too much can be a hell! "
