Short Term Constipation
The first example is obvious. Sudden occurrence of constipation plus discomforts, especially pain is telling you that you have acute constipation and you need medical attention urgently.
Another type constipation that happens within a short period of time is psychosomatic constipation, occurs due to change of environment or pressure. Bowel movement returns to normal when the stress factor is removed. This can happen when you are traveling. For me, it's due to too much work in the mornings.
Long-term Constipation or, chronic constipation
1.Constant Constipation
a. Hypotonic Constipation or, atonic constipation A hot guy with six-pack tummy doing his sit-ups. As easy as pie. Another guy with a stomach so flabby that you would rather not see him shirtless...doing his sit-ups. Or should I say, will he ever complete the first and only sit-up?
"Hypotonic" means decrease in abdominal muscle tone. Consequently the weak muscles are not able to to push the bowel to move as much as it should. I would love to ask every 6 abs guy I meet if they have hypotonic constipation. Anyways this kind of constipation is common among older people, thin women or those who don't exercise regularly. Other causes of hypotonic constipation is insufficient peristalsis, dietary fiber and fluid intake. The sufferer and is characteristically bloated. The sufferer is recommended to exercise and adjust diet.
b. Hypertonic constipation, or spastic constipation The opposite of hypotonic constipation. Accelerated peristalsis which do not propel bowel movements. Sufferer experiences abdominal muscle cramps due to the spasms. However his/her stools stay in the colon and therefore water is reabsorbed resulting in hard stools in the form of small lumps or stick that is as thick as a pencil. It is said this kind of constipation can develop into irritable bowel syndrome.
c. Rectal constipation You know it's time to go to the toilet...but it's kind of rush in the morning, so you suppress the urge until later. Sometimes it's days much later...ah no big deal, you can always use an enema. Hmmm actually, you are training the rectum not to tell your brain about the need to poo and when the rectum gets used to not conveying signals to the brain, stools will pile up...Hemorrhoids, fissures and other painful rectal irritations may deter you from having a proper toilet visit.
2.Constipation as a symptom of diseases same as acute constipation in the short term section.
Unknown
Idiopathic constipation Idiopathic is formed from Greek words "idios"(one's own) and pathos (suffering), it means approximately "a disease of its own kind." Idiopathic constipation is of unknown origin and does not respond to standard treatment. For constipation relief of chronic idiopathic constipation, please click here.
Functional Constipation
Constipation that does not have a physical... or ...hormonal or other body chemistry cause. It may have a neurological, psychological or psychosomatic cause. A person with functional constipation may be healthy, yet has difficulty defecating. --as defined by Wikipedia
However, I also read that functional constipation is caused by poor diet and lifestyle. Three types of functional constipation are: colonic inertia ( weak muscular activity of the colon, leading to swelling of the organ and constipation), delayed transit and pelvic floor dysfunction ( weakness of the muscles in the pelvis surrounding the anus and rectum).
That makes psychosomatic constipation functional constipation and probably idiopathic constipation could be functional constipation, eh?
