Causes of Constipation Are You Sick? Fever, pain and --- constipation are among numerous symptoms of serious illnesses.
As I am writing this page about the possibility of a disease lurking behind the causes of constipation, I shudder at the frailty of mortals.
I would like to discuss from the major component of the human body, the head down to the exit of the gut. It is not possible to mention all the maladies that causes constipation, I'd give one or two examples as we mentally inspect each section of the body.
Difficulty in eliminating stools could be due to:
Low concentration of potassium in the blood ( hypokalemia). High level of blood sugar ( diabetes).
Autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks body tissues. An example is scleroderma characterized by formation of scar tissues on the skin and organs.
Disease of the brain and spinal cord such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
The thyroid gland below the Adam's apple not producing sufficient thyroid hormone - Hypothyroidism
Regurgitation of gastric acid that causes burning sensation in the esophagus just below the breastbone ( heartburn).
Inflammation of pouches formed on the outside of the colon ( diverticulities). Intestinal obstruction, tumor or cancer.
The muscles surrounding the anus are not able to relax during defecation ( spastic pelvic floor syndrome ).
Long list indeed are the possibilities but generally, the symptons below associated with constipation needs prompt attention of a doctor:
Blood in stool
Tarry stool
Mucous in stool
Unusual stool colour
Abdominal pain
vomiting
Fever
Worsening of constipation
Constipation that does not respond to remedies and treatments.

I had one of the symptoms- blood. Fortunately it was only hemorrhoids. I am grateful to have the service of a meticulous and sympathetic doctor. As much as I wish none of us has to be sick, I hope you take care of your body by being alert with your bowel habits and do not hesitate to seek medical help when necessary.
